Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) and Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
In the US, millions of people get sick each year because of foodborne illnesses. Thousands are hospitalized, and some even die. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) addresses this preventable public health issue. The goal of this law, signed by President Obama in 2011, is to make sure that the US food supply is secure through preventing contamination rather than simply responding to it.
One of the requirements of the FSMA is the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP). Under it, importers have to ensure that the food they produce is not adulterated or misbranded with respect to allergen labeling. Each food much be made in a manner that is on par with public health protection as preventive controls, as well as create their own safety regulations. FSVP importers with more than 500 employees complied in 2016, while importers with less than 500 employees began complying on May 30, 2017.
These are some of the key details of the FSMA:
- Enhanced Partnerships
- Imported Food Safety
- Inspection and Compliance
- Preventive Controls
